Radio (Voice)

The American Life
487:Harper High School, Part One
Blog Response

After listening to this episode from The American Life, I was able to develop a much better understanding of what it would be like to live in an area with such gun violence. Harper High School in Chicago has experienced, in the pas year alone, the shootings of 29 individuals, 8 of which had died. As murders and shootings have risen, principal Leonetta Sanders as well as her staff have tried everything in their ability to protect their students from getting involved or harmed in such activities. While they take any precautions they can, stopping everything as a whole is nearly impossible.
Throughout the radio episode there are a number of techniques used to make the story telling more effective.  Using direct recordings of teachers interacting with students reinforces the staff’s intentions of reprimanding with love and the caring relationships that they share with one another. At certain parts you are clearly able to hear the emotional strain this has had on students, parents and teachers as they express themselves. You can’t help but find yourself getting caught up in the impact that the direct voice recordings of those that attend Harper have. With the combination of those and the narrator further explaining the story, I found myself intrigued and eager to hear the rest.
Not only does the danger of it all create problems but the emotional toll it takes on students and faculty has become extremely difficult to cope with. Radio episodes like this are extremely important when it comes to making people aware of such circumstances around the world.

Narrative (Representation)~

Orange is the New Black
 2013
 America
 Jenji Kohan

In the fairly new American comedy-drama series Orange is the New Black, main character Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) plays the role of a woman protagonist sentenced to prison for a previous crime she had been a part of with her past girlfriend. Piper being an ordinary, middle class, white female recently engaged would most likely be characterized based off of stereotypes. These pre-conceived views are not entirely shown to be accurate as her story unfolds.
In the pilot episode there is a scene where an individual tells Piper that some of the other women in the prison may see her as a wealthy white women, this supports and plays into the notions of how her character is likely to be viewed. With that being said the fact that a women like Piper is in such a position in the first place challenges these assumptions. The strength she exhibits shows how tough she actually is, even with her circumstances being so unfortunate. Although her internal fight to remain strong may cause complications, there is definitely more to her character then at first glance.
One screen shot that would best represent the essence of the protagonist would have to be around 11:44 where Piper is preparing to say goodbye to her fiancĂ©. She is sad to leave but keeping it together and finding some comic relief when joking about the security guard asking her to get rid of her cell phone.

Documentary (Surveillance)

Nature: Animal Odd Couples

The Documentary Film Animal Odd Couples, directed by Susan Fleming and Sara Marino is a heart-warming story of a few unusual friendships that different species have created with one another. Capturing the lives of these animals opens the eyes of the audience, showing unimaginable footage of the interactions between two beings. Evoking many emotions from pure joy seeing the care and love that two species could share, to the awful heartache of two animals having to separate as the cycle of life takes its toll. The film leaves a lasting imprint on the audience through it’s thought out selection of stories, introducing new ideas of animal emotions.
Throughout the film the directors focus in on the point of view of each story and the ways in which audiences may view them. From there, the animals relationships are further spoken about introducing the outlook of the specific species themselves, and the ways in which they’ve developed their attitudes. Voicing the reasons such friendships have developed and the thoughts and emotions (that are known) of animals.
One still of the film in specific that I personally thought best represented a perceived power dynamic had been in the middle of the documentary when the director introduced the story of Jack and Charlie. Charlie an elderly horse that lost his vision due to old age and Jack a fairly older goat grew an inseparable bond when Charlie needed Jack by his side. While initially Charlie cared for Jack because he was the bigger of the two, roles reversed as Charlie’s age caught up with him. In the shot taken of Jack guiding Charlie through trails to graze there is a clear change in power, as Jack becomes the friend caring for Charlie.

The Medium is the Massage

Pages 18-25

~ Touching upon the ways in which education affects the world today, the author addresses the difference of electric information with in a home environment and that of a modern day classroom. While the atmosphere of a home includes the information brought by a television, the setting of a classroom introduces the ideas of patterns, subjects, schedules etc. The image displayed beside the text seems to present that idea of organized arrangement, showing a specific device used to reach a task wanting to be accomplished.

~ With the advancement of technology though how important is an individual once a machine can replace the job that they do? The duplicated photographs on page 21 of a single man seems to symbolize the lack of individuality a person holds when it comes to particular jobs. Although not all jobs can be replaced by technology due to the call for different demands, in time to come will that still stand?

~ Techniques of the past are far too tedious for current day approaches. While governing populations had been straight forward, influencing people is no longer the way it used to be. Everyday events alter the mindsets of individuals changing people’s outlooks constantly, resulting in listening those that used to be unheard. On page 25 it states, “there is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening”, meaning that if one is considering something there is no way they can ignore or disregard what they are thinking.
